I bought a box of knex and this was in it..anybody know what is for/where it came from?

It was actually the drop mechanism for the drop tower. A separate gear would make contact with the extended teeth to lift the car up, then lose contact in the flat teeth and drop the car. That way it'd work with a continuous motor.

It's a pretty neat gear. I don't think I have any in my collection but I can imagine that it could be useful for automation and such like without having to make custom gears.
