Night Fury and Revolution have been torn down and removed from K-Land. Both had major design flaws and had been non operational for way too long.  I have been plotting a version 2.0 of Night Fury for a long time now, and yesterday I finally bit the bullet and ripped out both non working rides.

I AM EXTREMELY OVERWHELMED, currently with the under taking I have decided to take on with this project. I have a general idea of where I want things to go, but I am going to use a similar color scheme, I am going to  hopefully use a lot of pre exisitng structures to complete the new ride.

From the original build, I regretted the initial drop of Night Fury.  I am going to go with a more traditional B&M beginning, of a small drop into a curve, and then I am hoping to do a clothoid loop with the lift hill going thru it.

I am not making promises about my posting frequency or the speed of my progress.  This first post is just an update to give a visual on things.  The lift hill is definately not correctly supported, but it is in the location and approximate height that is should be at... Had to make sure things were going to fit, I need to start building the base out bigger before I can complete the work needed to finish the lift hill, and I want to complete the first drop, before I get over zealous on the lift and find out I have to change it.....

so without further ado, here is my newest build.

Haha, I like the extremely overwhelmed part. Partly because I can identify, but mostly because  I'm sure it means this will turn out to be pretty impressive.

It's almost as if I time traveled back to 2011. Blue and purple and black: definitely my favorite SS color scheme I've seen. Still sucks you had to take it down, though, but now it may be reborn like a phoenix from the ashes...

Whilst it's a shame you had to take it down in the end, I'm really excited to see you building again - Basilisk Rail and Night were two of my favourite K'nex coasters ever.

Speaking of Basilisk Rail, how's that holding up?

I like the lift colors a lot, have fun building in that small tight space lol. Make sure lube and weigh your trains for this coaster.

Actually so excited to see this build! Nightfury was amazing as it was and I'm sure this one will shape up to just as good, if not better.

It is very hard to build something that is over your head... literally and figuratively.

The structure is currently at 6'8", so I can walk under the top of the lift hill with no issues.

So I am taking a slightly different approach for the predrop and drop then I usually do.  With the height and everything else going on, I am simply trying to create some temporary structuring to figure out the generalized line that is needed.  I plan to fully rebuild the  lift structure (since I mostly just lengthen the old lift) and I can see it is sagging and has some major issues that already need fixed, and I know that I need to move a few supports to help line things up better.

Until I am able to figure out where things need to go and how it should look and I have some extra strength into things, I am just roughly laying things out.  Also nothing is complete, this is just where I had to stop for the day.

The drop crest seems a little too steep, and the lift crest sorta looks like a triangle, but I understand that nothing is as it seems when it's not finished... even with these track imperfections, this thing is still extreme. One more thing: this might be a dumb question, but do you actually climb onto the wooden planks to build while on top of the base? Edit: (2 posts down) commando, isn't it obvious? He uses alchemy; takes useless lego pieces and turns them into rare knex pieces. :P

Yes, I walk on the wood. It is very thin Luan board, and or wooden wall paneling. I weight about 170lbs, holds me with no problems.

The pre-drop curve and the drop are definitely mishapped. Not enough support to hold their shape... Unfortunately it takes so much longer to do things when building tubes 8- 8.5 grey rods tall... Lol

Do you just like, injection mold your own knex? I'm always amazed at how you have piles of the really hard to find colors.

It has been how long since I posted and this is all the further I have gotten... I can't wait to be building at a decent I can reach, but then again, I am not nearly as agile as I was 6 years ago when I started building these things.

So I still need more support, as I am still getting more movement then I would like, so yes I know there are a few kinks in the top curve, hopefully I will have that fixed by the next time I post.

For now, here is the general concept.  feedback for the drop would be appreciated, I am trying to line things up so I can do a loop around the lift hill,

also I am rebuilding a new lift hill structure, the old structure was definitely not strong enough for this height....

aight the overview shot

Thought I would include Basilisk in a shot

that is a lot of supports already..... Need to make more!!

Now here's a thread that I never expected to see.  Honestly, if you're going for longevity and durability, then I would suggest using a spine like Jogumpie did on his massive display looper.  Essentially a thin layer of box supports lining the underside of the track, being held up by tube supports.  Otherwise, I'm just excited to see what you've got in store for us.

Progress is slow.....

Clearly the loop is not complete.  I am fighting with the banking on the drop, and getting ready to add some more supports to the drop and into the loop section, so I can get things lined up for testing to make sure the height is correct. Due to lack of support, my track has shifted from me not being graceful as I work on things...opps

at any rate, here is where I am currently....

Well, I can not say I'm super thrilled with my current shaping or track smoothness in the least.  But The train is able to clear everything and the supports are holding decently.

The loop needs a lot more support, it really is a tear drop I promise, but the center falls because it needs more support... Also, while the track is in place for the hill, nothing is actually fully set and ready to go.

Currently I am working on making a new stronger lift hill, so that I can possibly start on making a functional lift hill.  and then I will hopefully continue to add supports, and smooth everything out more......

Here are some picture updates. Enjoy

It's always a bad idea to have vertical tubes to support a loop... even if those are to be temporary. There is a way to better support the loop.

ickus help
Basically, have diagonal supports going perpendicular to the track on the lower part of the loop. Then, have an upside-down slanted V tube support setup to support to where the track becomes vertical. This greatly limits how much the loop can move. It also gives gravity a harder time of squishing the loop out of shape. Final thing: just to be clear, I'm not doubting your building skillz or anything, as I believe in you. I'm just trying to help. ;)
