You should really hurry up on that video. Especially the how-it-works part. I'm about to start working on my first launch immediately after I post this.

Sorry it took so long, but I really wanted to do a good job on editing this one. Here it is - the final video and how-it-works!

What's funny is that I never thought this would turn into a completed coaster - I only wanted to build an automatic cable launch at first.
Also, the timelapse at the beginning of the video is in reverse... Meaning that I took this coaster apart in about 4 hours and filmed it. So it's all in pieces again, ready to become the next model...whenever that might happen!

A fantastic final video for an all round spectacular coaster.  I hope you find the time to build one every now and again with your new job.

How did you do the slow mo panning shots?

Thanks! I took the slo-mo shots on my Galaxy S8 and did the panning by hand. You just have to pan a little faster because the shot gets slowed down to 1/8 the speed.

Okay...this may just be coincidence, but does anyone see the resemblance to Vekoma's newest layout? Specifically the non-inverting tophat and volcano theming.

Awesome final video, one of the best launch mechanisms I've ever seen. how did you get those motors to connect onto the knex pieces to pull in the launch cable when it resets? Your trains are weighted as well right? Would love you to take one more crack at the Everest recreation as well!

The beggining of the video is so intense. Specifically when you turned on the ride with the key, the music is so dramatic.
I'm absolutely in love with this coaster. Really great job, one of my all time favorites.

Your builds never disappoint Steel! Can definitely see the inspiration from Volcano, and that resemblance to the Top Gun layout is uncanny...

It's rare to find a coaster like this which has great automation and innovation whilst also having a really exciting layout, with airtime, inversions, positive Gs...the lot! The theming is the icing on the cake.

Makes me want to do a launcher myself, but then I remember I'm a micro builder  :P

^Yep, as someone who's been greatly inspired by this coaster, building a launch is awful . . . but very satisfying.

Great job with the video!

Is that a 775 and a versa planetary cocking the launching? If so what reduction?

Also the slow motion video is fantastic! Its super cool to see how the train bounces between the the different wheels. Really lets you get an idea of what forces would be on a rider.

Was there any stabilization on the slow motion? IDK if the S8 has mechanical stabilization

Thanks! The large motor/gearbox has a hexagonal output shaft, so I made a hexagonal hole in a red K'Nex gear. Drilled a round hole and then filed the edges flat. Yep, my trains are weighted with 4 steel ball bearings hot-glued under each car. They're pretty heavy, but the volcano structure really helped because it's a lot stronger than tube supports!
Sadly, Everest probably won't happen again - I'm much more interested in doing a custom layout because that's part of why I love building.

Haha thank you, dramatic videos are a lot more fun to make anyway!

Thanks! It all came together in layers - first the automation, then I added a long layout, then I decided to add theming too. Maybe a launch would be hard to do, but I believe every other element of the automation could be done with micro K'Nex too. You should give it a shot!

Thanks Chaos! The effort is absolutely worth it once you get the automation working. Some of my friends' kids (5 and 7 yrs old) came to see this coaster, and the look on their faces was priceless. Like it was magic.

Yep it's a Versa Planetary gearbox, it has 2 stages so I think it's 100:1 but I'm not positive. I'm really impressed with its power output.
I'm glad you liked the slo mo! I was really surprised at how good it looked when I first tested it. Yep the S8 has optical image stabilization, and it's most noticeable in those slo-mo shots. You can see in the last one that there's some nice airtime as it comes out of the tunnel :)
