I remember when it all first started happening, I didn't like the idea of it. I get that it's role playing and stuff but I'm sure most of us will have enough time in our future to actually be in companies (which will probably suck).

I'm not knocking on the idea at all, cause it's cool to get newer members involved and something to strive for, but it has created some sort of segregation among the community. Nowadays I see people in contests voting for only models made by members of their company, which is kind of unfair. Also, members that aren't in companies who have construction threads in Freelance get dramatically less attention than those who have threads in Sponsered. That kind of puts a damper on things, cause it makes members feel like they have to be in a company to make a name for themselves.

Of course, this is all coming from a member of Adrenaline Coasters whose last post in their thread was a few months ago haha.

Overall, I wouldn't mind doing away with companies. It's not like I'm going to be an advocate for that, cause I don't mind them that much, but to me they are just "ehhh".

^You mention employees voting for each other in contests. That would probably be the same or worse when there would be a cap on the amount of companies (thus they would grow bigger). Would you vote for or against such a cap?

I would vote for a cap now, as the site is very slow. If it picks up and starts growing like crazy then I would say to expand it. Defunct companies like bizarre coaster building (no offense) were kinda pointless. I would also say that any company that hasnt gotten members in 2 months of their starting date should be shut down.

I'd like BGTKing and other staff post their opinions on this latest matter. Whether capping would be good or not, whether continuing or stopping altogether would be good or not and your opinion on the segregating of SSC.

Ok, so I have a new found opinion.

In the defense of keeping companies, I think it definitely has helped alot of members form new relationships and improve their building skills. Dutch Details specifically comes to mind along with SteelWay Inventions. Members of these companies obviously won't want to get rid of companies, and why should they?

In the defense of those that do not like the segregation, I think that most can agree the most obvious place of segregation is Freelance Construction. Many members that aren't in companies get forgotten because people just simply don't check Freelance anymore.

Wouldn't it just be easy to take Freelance and Sponsered and merge them into one subforum? You can still have your company prefixes and all that, but the people that aren't in companies would most likely get more views than they are now.

It's a start... not a solution to all the issues, but it could help a few for sure.

That's already been done, for a while.

Personally, I'm not a supporter of companies anymore, though by no means am I one to bring it down, its whatever. I think on the same mindset as Chubs, but if it will continue, I'd vote against a cap.

I like the idea of companies, I started BOF because i wanted some place me and fellow Christians could discuss things with out being ridiculed, and as well to share our passion for roller coasters.

Also, I wanted to make this company because i felt like i belonged in one. But i had no idea which one to be in and realized there wasn't a designated Christian company so i asked CCC if he would like to help me with it and he accepted and i've had a great time being in Builders of Faith.

I feel that the companies could work much better in the "social group" format, where members can join or leave companies as they wish. It gives the presidents more control over their companies and makes it easier to add/delete users.

I think it would also help if we could join more than one. That way the companies can be more specific in what they specialize in. For example, say I like to automate my coasters. I could be in a company that focuses on automation. But if I also use VV track, then I could be in a VV-based company.

I think we should keep them in the format they're in now. Nobody uses social groups.

To tell you the truth, the idea never really took off like I thought it would. The biggest reason I like companies now is the innovation. Steelway and Aminspec have made some pretty epic things, and I think companies have influenced this. All of us in Aminspec have liked the friendly competition between Steelway, and it has made us work harder when making things. I believe the same is true for Steelway.

I am pretty much ready to do away with companies. I would like to introduce something new though. I think things like companies help to keep things fun on the forums for members. It's time for a new craze to take over. I have some new ideas that I would like to talk about. I will talk to the staff about it first though.

^Can't wait to hear from you.

Using the Social Groups for 'companies' is not gonna happen. Indeed nobody uses social groups.

^^Steel, I see you talking about companies covering all niches in K'NEX coaster building, but I think that doesn't work. When companies start, they choose a certain specialization, but in the end they all tend to simply build coasters, whether they are innovative or not. Very specialized company types like Image Design, Ride Design and Theming Design have died out, because in the end it is all about building coasters. Specialized companies attract fewer people than regular companies with a broader view. That is why I am against further specialization and I think that a first thing I'd like to do is do away with the company types and make all companies uniform in that manner.

...And I do think I don't want any more new companies.

At first I thought the companies would be a good idea. Layout companies would help kids who couldn't come up with their own, theming ones would give people ideas, and the other companies would help do what ever they did (I don't even remember all of them) But lately it's just been annoying. There are way more companies than needed and they barely do anything that they say they do. Companies have turned into "let's just join this kid's company because I know him." Quite frankly I think they should be done away with completely. Either that or just have one company per catagory, 1 layout, 1 theming, 1 innovation, etc. Theres just my two cents ;)

^ And Sferico is going to be that Layout company, right;) I like fraggs idea, but I think we should just keep the main companys. Not just one of each. And if someone wants to make a new company, they need it approved by the staff, and they need to meet the rules.

New concept:

Everyone is their own "company", but you can still form "partnerships" or other relationships among other members. You could still patent things by yourself or under the names of several people.
