So Yesterday I turned 17 and got a nifty GoPro Hero 3 Silver edition camera. Naturally I wanted to figure out a way to attach it to K'nex so I could take videos from a variety of angles I couldn't get otherwise. Lucky for me GoPro made it super easy and here is what I came up with.



I recommend if you use this, use this as a consept and not necessary 100% the same as I did as it is very versatile. I understand this tutorial is for a very small (if any) group of people on this site but I think it's cool and maybe others can get ideas from this. I wouldn't be posting this but it was so perfect it had to be shared.

This is just a concept of a structure I used to attached it to.

I plan on using this concept and others on my final video of this coaster (Swarm) and I'll add pictures later. I think the GoPro camera is extremely versatile and I would love to see it used more in the K'nex coaster community.

That camera and setup is giving you some great shots. Can't wait to see final videos made with these angles.

I'm definitely gonna do stuff like this with my Black Edition. 60 FPS 1080p is gonna be sweet.

The only issue I have with GoPro's (and any other wide angle lens) and filming "static" things is that everything looks warped and stretched. Not sure if it looks al so good with K'NEX coasters because trains and track look incredibly stretched.

Especially in a community full of coaster critics, warped track can easily be mistaken for poor shaping

My R80XL timelapse did use a wideangle lens and most of the shots other shots were made with a wide® angle lens but that didn't cause warping, it did soften the edges a bit which I liked in the end, it looked made the toy look pop out more.

Shooting an entire video with a huge FOV may not look the best. Consider switching between some wideangle action shots and maybe slowmotion too but try to keep the general picture filmed with a regular camera(lens).

The test video is a good example of that, when the train comes to the forward turn it pops out which looks cool, but shooting entire videos or overviews may not do your ride justice. But in the end it doesn't matter, because your final video will come together with editing magic, so you can always leave shots out or put them back in.

But GoPro's are great cameras (albeit highly overpriced ) and I'm sure there are a lot of uses for it in the modelcoaster community.

(Hey, get a chest mount and ride some real life roller-coasters and rides with it, those always look great!)
