The science behind gears:
Teeth-little things sticking out of the gear, which classifies it as a gear.
EX 1)** Gear A has 20 teeth, and gear B has 10 teeth. If A has the power, B is the receiver, then the ratio of the gears is 2:1. Therefore gear B going two times faster than gear A. When a gear is going faster than the power gear, it loses torque, or the maximum load it can carry.
EX 2)** Gear A has 10 teeth, and gear B has 20 teeth. If gear A is the power, and gear B is the receiver, then the ratio of the gears is 1:2. Therefore gear B is going at half the speed of gear A. When a gear is going slower than the power gear, it gains torque, or the maximum load it can carry.
EX 1) The blue gear is spinning faster than the yellow gear, but has less torque.
EX 2) The red gear is spinning slower than the blue gear, and has more torque.
EX 3) Both red gears are going just as fast as the other, and have the same torque.
Teeth count for knex gears:
Black/BLUE/Grey=14 teeth
RED=34
YELLOW/Black=82 teeth
Ratios:
Blue:red :: .41:1
Red:Blue :: 2.43:1
Blue:Yellow :: .17:1
Yellow:Blue :: 5.86:1
Red:Yellow :: .41:1
Yellow:Red :: 2.41
all CAPS letters=gear color I used

I think almost every body knows about the gear ratios. But if you want to explain, go ahead. We may learn another thing or two.

the faster you make it go the less torque it has
the slower you make it go the more torque it has

Most people should understand this, but I am sure there are some who don't. Very nice tut...

Teeth count for knex gears:
Black/BLUE/Grey=14 teeth
RED=33
YELLOW/Black=81 teeth
Not 100% correct.
I am fairly certain the medium gears (red/yellow) have 34 teeth and the big (yellow/black) gears have 82 teeth.
That means the blue/red ratio and the red/yellow ratio are nearly identical at about 0.41:1 when geard down and 2.41:1 when geared up.
Combining the blue and yellow gears yields ratios of about 0.17:1 and 5.86:1
