I decided to start working on a new flat ride for the expo's in 2012. It will be...

...a top spin...

I am planning on building 16 seats, back to back, like on the suspended top spin. Because I am at the head of Dutch Details, I am supposed to pay attention to details. No really, I just enjoy putting effort in creating good-looking rides.

Posted Image

The ride will feature old school K'NEX people.

Posted Image

And the seats will be filled, of course.

Posted Image

Will be building more soon. So you can expect another update this week, perhaps tomorrow.

That looks great so far. Can't imagine the size of it when it's complete!

I can't believe that you still have enough pieces, especially because this looks like it's going to eat pieces :o

It bends a little, but I managed to reduce it to a minimum.

Posted Image

Twenty seats, sixteen of them are filled.

Next up... the arms.

Yes it does bend, but maybe you could put in some rods for support in the red connectors where the headrests are since they don't look like they're being used. Also, are you purposely leaving out those 4 seats without passengers because of the weight predicament, or did you just run out of people or...?

Overall, I'm really excited to see how this will turn out considering no one as far as I can tell has attempted or completed this. First Bumpercars, now a Top Spin, what's next!

Why don't you use stiff black rods?

To tell you the truth, the seats don't look super good right now in my opinion. I feel like the scale is to big, but the seats are too big also. I feel that once you have it installed and spinning, it will really sag, and maybe fall apart. I wish you good luck making this work!

Yes it does bend

But will it blend?

I think that might be a problem with the sagging. I remember seeing KR11's Top spin and even then it was really fragile. It looks like the sagging is caused by the lack of a rod in the middle. I'd try adding an orange rod through the holes of the 90* connectors, that might solve your problem.

Maybe use black (carbon) rods for it, rather than orange.

Actually there is a tube between the seat rows, containing black carbon rods. Sagging doesn't create problems, nor does it during spinning. I tested the spinning just a few minutes ago (by hand) and it's working great so far. The orange rods in the headrests will remain orange, replacing them with black rods wouldn't help. A few seats are open because I don't have more K'NEX puppets, because open seats create a nice variation in the looks of the ride and because the puppets' hands wouldn't fit on the restraints there.

Pictures coming in a few hours.

The bottom half is ready to go. I am still working on the top half, I still have to find out how to connect the counterweight to the structure. Not content with the current version, but I had to call it a day.

Meh... it still needs a lot of work, but iteration is my specialty.

Looks nice! How do you plan on powering the beast? And making the seats spin and lock at the right times?

Both arms will be powered by motors, synchronous of course. The spinning of the seats will also be powered from both sides, synchronous. No actual locking, because the non-scaled gravity would make it swing too fast for realism.

Posted Image

On both arms there's a bottle of water, filled to the edge to prevent the water (and thus mass) from moving. Removed the wheels inside the arms, but I will put them back in, as they seem to create a perfect balance. The whole structure for the arms is very sturdy and there's hardly any bending in them when horizontal. On both sides there's a tan rod (I'll replace them with black ones), which control the rotation of the seats. Large gears will be placed on these rods (since they are the axis of rotation), but NOT connected to them with a tan clip. The gears will be connected to the arms, though, and that way the arms and the seats can be rotated independently.

For some reason I imagined it would end up a lot bigger.
