Kings Island said, when releasing their Article on the Water Park Expansion that fixing Son of Beast was being planned, but they did not have the funding for it at the current time. I also read that the man who is in charge of maintenance at KI said that SOB could run, he just does not feel safe enough about it. We are due for a New Coaster Soon probably, so why not make it SOB? Plus, its the tallest woodie in the world, fix it already.

Rocky Mountain confirmed at IAAPA that nothing will open in 2012, but 2013 will come with a brand new, custom coaster AND a track replacement coaster. Now along with Mean Streak being wished, Son of Beast has also been rumored for it, and with 2013 being the opening date, we could see either one being the coaster to get it.

Personally, I'm putting my money on Son of Beast (not because I'm a home boy). If Cedar Point is putting the work to do re-tracking on Mean Streak for next season, that's telling me that they are willing to go with it as it is for a few more years. On the other hand, Son of Beast has just been sitting there with no known work happening, which either tells me it's going to come down (bonfire, please) or that a renovation is in the design phase.

Obviously, I don't know what is being planned, but I'm still going to speculate.

I was wrong.
Silver Dollar City
Six Flags Fiesta Texas

Rattler at SFFT is getting the Texas Giant makeover and Silver Dollar City is getting the custom coaster.

So while Mean Streak is getting the usual offseason re-tracking, I have no idea what this now means for Son of Beast.

Mean Streak's current layout is just plain boring and uninspired. Tear it down and put a GCI racer/dark ride combo themed to the wild west in its place.

*bump*

This is ridiculous. Two good choices and one shitty choice. Mean streak AND Son of Beast would be amazing with a makeover.

Rattler needs it bad, and Six Flags is the company that has been talking to them. If Cedar Fair wants Mean Streak and Son of Beast to be re-done through Rocky Mountain, it'll get done. But for now, they seem content with have GCI do the work they need done.

Very correct, Rattler is the biggest woodie I have personally ridden, unless Toro is bigger, didn't seem so, and it was a scary ride. Not in the since that it was too big, I like that factor, but it felt like it was going to fall apart while I was riding it... NOT a pleasant experience. Not to mention the awful shaking of the trains. Looks like we'll be heading up to SFFT next year.

El Toro is taller and faster, but Rattler is longer.

Rattler is a weird coaster, especially with that large, slow helix on top of the cliff. (That's one of the things that will be removed).

Anyways wooden coaster are techinaly meant to be bumpy and rough. when i went to waldameer i me and my friend jacob rode front seats on this wooden coaster and we were saying how bumpy it was and we hit heads really hard together and we dizzy. So then we just sat down and waited till the dizzness went away then we were both fine. So I dont think that Mean streak should be torn down because it says "Mean" in it so that could be so bumpy and rough.

There's a line between the "should-be rough" and "too rough" though. Woodies are supposed to bump you around a little bit, but they shouldn't give you headache from the train bouncing. Both Mean Streak and Son of Beast ride the track terribly and rather than let you enjoy the ride, you're more focused on the bouncing and jerking. That's where I think the line is.

I remember waiting in line for the rapids ride and watching the whole structure shake after the giant turnaround. There's a youtube vid... lemme go find it for you guys... yall should see this...

EDIT: Found it. Party starts around 0:52

That's pretty crazy. Some movement of the structure is necessary, but that seems by far too much.

Glad that helix will be gone, never understood the point of it... and yes, the ride is SCARY, like you could sort of hear boards cracking and in the que line I was able to peel the wood off because of how rotten it was.

EDIT: If the helix is removed that would make the ride rather short, that helix takes up around 45 seconds of rise time, so I would expect to see a somewhat lengthened layout based on the saved speed and replenishing the ride time. Needs...a...makeover.....BAD.

That is bad. They need to fix the structure too. Damn.

If they extend the first drop all the way to the ground (again), that'd be one heck of a woodie. Rcdb says it's 180ft. That's almost a hyper. I hope they can transform it into more of a terrain woodie. I remember most of the ride was really high off the ground, so you were kinda expecting a huge drop which never really came.

It actually was extended all the way to the ground, then someone died on it and the family of the deceased sued six flags which resulting in a court order to make it smaller. If they do this right, it could end up being a very good woodie. I would like to see the coaster go down to ground level at some point, the whole thing is at least 60 ft off the ground... Tons of possibilities with this coaster.

But what about the structure? If it shakes that much with wooden trains then wouldn't it shake even more with steel trains and track.
EDIT: Changed the name of the thread from Why is Mean Streak still Standing? to Wooden Coaster Discussion Thread. The name fits the topic better.

They add extra supports, and replace rotten board along with the track. On TG, the only thing that is even close to the same is the layout.
