OK so for some reason, some of my yellow connectors have this brown stuff in them. The connectors have never been in anything that would make them look like this. Does anyone know why this is? Here are some close ups of the worst connector I could find.

HAHAHAHAHA! (lol) *instantly stops laughing* No.

Where they like that when you got them?

They're about 2 years old, and they never left the knex bin.

Please marry me.

Never any outdoor builds. One day they were mysteriously there.

What types of lubrication did you use? You might have accidentally put some on those connectors then dirt might have collected on the pieces. That happened when I sprayed pam on my cars (never do that ever) and the same thing happened to my snowflakes.

If that is not the cause, I don't know what is.

They were like that before I used lubricant. Some of it doesn't even look like dirt, but its a light red color.

I'm not done building yet.

I have the same on some of my pieces (mostly yellow half-moons!), I usually put them aside or put them in places they aren't noticeable.

Never had anything spilled on them, and I would clean them if soda went on them.

but how would they be like, you know, stuck on the pieces then?

Maybe the heat sort of melted it into the piece? I Don't know.

eew. That's all I can say. My standard knex snowflakes have a greasy coating from vegetable oil that i used for lubrication on my coaster that failed. I tried to wash them off. even soaked the things in pure dish soap! Nothing worked.

Nothing appears to be wrong with them, they're just discolored. I'd go ahead and use them anyways.

Put those pieces and other large sized pieces if necessary in a "delicates" laundry bag and wash with detergent. Should both clean and sanitize. Make sure the mesh of the bag is small enough to trap any parts in the bag. Store your pieces in sealed containers.
