Hello everyone,

Me and Maarten have decided to build a giant Ferris Wheel with the name SkyWheel. Once done, SkyWheel will have a height of approximately 5.6 meters and it will be put outside. We plan on doing a set-up as soon as possible.

That thing is enormous, you're going to need a huge axis to support a wheel this size! :o. Can't wait for the final result!

This is an incredibly large build. Good luck and I cannot wait to see the wheel.

Thanks for the comments!

Saturday I purchased a steel axle which will hold the wheel. Maarten and I have spend almost the entire Saturday building on SkyWheel. The outer ring is done and 1/3 of the wheel has already been assembled. Next on our to-do-list is to build all the tubes. We will assemble as much of the wheel as possible, basically until we get to the roof.

That looks fantastic! Are you sure the supports can handle the weight of the wheel and possibly a bit of wind outside? Some parts seem a bit weak to buckling :P Other than that, it looks pretty solid :)

We are sure that the supports can handle the weight and a bit of wind. However, the Ferris Wheel cannot withstand strong winds, so we will have to set it up on a calm day.

Thanks!

I cannot wait either. ;)

Maarten and I decided to change the thick tubes to thinner tubes. The total number of tubes on the Ferris Wheel will double, from 27 to 54. To prevent major bending of the tubes, we decided to build a thin inner ring for extra support. Right now SkyWheel's wheel is halfway done.

A total of 54 tubes will be connected to the hub

On most pictures SkyWheel does not look nearly as impressive as in reality, so here is a picture with me and SkyWheel. I am 1.90 meters (6.2 feet) tall

Will this be taller then Great Wheel of Holland? (or something like that) This thing sure looks like it will be.

Your attention to detail is phenomenal. I also like how you cut down on the thickness of the tubes, but made up for the lack of strength by doubling the tube count.
It may be redundant, but phenomenal work here you two.

I have to be honest- I didn't think it was that huge until you stood in front of it. :o
Fantastic work, it is absolutely gorgeous.

The record at the time of GWoH has been beaten a couple of times already. However, most record breaking Ferris Wheels don't look nearly as pretty as GWoH or this amazing beauty!

I really like the connections to the hub, it looks very complex.

It will be taller than Great Wheel of Holland. SkyWheel will be approximately 1 meter taller than GWOH.

That is exactly why I made a picture with me in front of it - to show how tall SkyWheel actually is. ;)

We will have to break it in parts and then bring it outside, where we will set it up again.
