Ok, I like these name suggestions so I am adding a poll so people can vote on their favorite name.

I am out of town at the moment, so I will not have an update for a little bit.

This is awesome! Glad to see you aren't completely going overboard. People have a tendency to think too big. You are keeping it small and progressing nicely.

Best uber bump I have seen :D

Lets talk layouts!

While away on vacation, I drew up an idea for a track layout that would be interesting visually, as well as fun to ride.

Posted Image

(I don't have access to a photo scanner where I am at right now, so I had to take a picture of my sketch. Sorry.)

It's hard to read, so I'll write out my plan.

5.5 ft drop 35*slope then pullout to-
3.5ft crest into-
180* right turn downhill (10* slope, 10*-25* progressive bank)-
1.5ft hill into-
30* right hand curve (on the ground)-
Bunny hop (1ft) under starting platform-
Brake Run-

Do you think this is a realistic layout, or just a pipe dream?

Comments/questions are always welcome!

That'll be hard to build, but boy will this be epic!

Seen so many of those fail, wonder if you can pull this off. At least you are motivated for that exact reason!

Well, I hope I will be able to make it somewhat similar to the sketch, but even if it does not work out, I guarantee that I will have some sort of interesting layout. Just not quite as ambitious.

No canceling, just downsizing!

Is the whole ride going to be laying on the ground? Because that seems more like a railroad. :P

I prefer the term "Height Impaired Terrain Coaster."

But in all seriousness, this ride will feature hills, and a raised station platform. Some of the ride will still follow the terrain. (ie: Track on the ground)

So you won't make a lift hill?

For the scope of this project, a lift hill would be too complicated and expensive.

There are none. I'm still out of town, but I will hopefully be able to get some work done Monday.

Exactly.
Things like these never go as planned, but you'll have to learn to adjust your ideas to the material and qualities that your environment has.

Are you so sure? I've been building the same design for mine since september of 2009. Not one thing has changed

Ooh...Update!

I have started work on the track by salvaging/refurbishing old track from my previous coaster.

I set up a little test piece of track, and recorded a test run of the car.

And here are some pictures of the segment joint design.

And here is a picture of the car's wheel arrangement

As always, comments/questions are very appreciated!

Just wondering, why hasn't anyone built a backyard coaster with turns in it?

I'm doing turns! Big long turns, with extra spicy banking!

Joking aside, I am planing on at least a few curves, and this test is no way inductive of the final layout.

CURVE!

Here is the new curve piece I assembled.

I will be making another one just like it tomorrow, and the turns "turned out" great. (get it?)

The layered track.

After finishing the curves, the rest of the track will be painted, and hopefully a hill will be next.
