there are three things I have always done to get the most out of m coaster:

use wd40 or some other light lube on the wheel axels. I've used my trumpet valve oil and i find that works better than the wd40.

keep your supports strong and stiff. if you find that you can't build very stiff supports you're probably building too big of a coaster.

add weights to the bottom of the cars. what i've done is tape 5 quarters together in a stack and then tape them very securely to the bottom cavity of each car (or as many as your supports can handle). be very careful with this, however; if the weights can move at all inside the cars it will kill your speed tremendously. also, like said above, if your supports aren't strong enough you can lose more speed and possibly damage your supports.

after doing all of that it's up to your layout. good luck.

The way some people find fault, you'd think there was some kind of reward.

Everyone else is welcome to post their methods of preserving speed, but please, do not repeat anything already quoted in the original post.

Use Tyrant's Cars (Once he mass produces them)

Also, I suggest building as high as possible on each hill, to enlongate as much speed from the previous hill.

Currently compiling a massive list

I really believe that this works: Go onto www.rollercoasterdatabase.com (www.rcdb.com) and look at as many coaster pics as you can. A year before I started building, I was obsessed with coasters (and still am), so I would be on the computer everyday, looking at as many pictures of coasters as possible, and recognizing the relationships between height of the first hill and the height of the other hills. If you do this, you will notice key ideas listed above: smoothness of the track, flowing/not sharp pullouts/pullins/transitions/elements, and realism. This combined with everything said above makes the perfect knex coaster.

^ I may be wrong but the more slippery the track is, the more it makes the train slide laterally, causing it to reduce speed.

^^^^^^^(CAC) now I finally get why your second was so good! :idea:idea

Usually I never lube the track. It's just long and useless. When I lube the wheel everything just works fine.

^Not from anything I have heard. But I don't have any personal experience. Don't try it unless you get a reliable conformation though. You should also get atleast 1 SS to make a good coaster.

BTW, he did NOT bump this thread. He asked a question.

^^ I wouldn't use lotion as lube. Maybe you could try dipping the axles in water and shaking the water off...that actually works better than lube for me.
