In honor of Math and Science Week, Cedar Point has teamed up with K’NEX for the first ever Great Thrill Ride Build-Off! Cedar Point Facebook fans can win a pair of tickets by building their own amusement park ride out of K’NEX pieces. The winner will also receive a Light Up Ferris Wheel building set courtesy of K’NEX, a $50 value.

My brother and I were bored one winter weekend so we decided to enter the contest. We decided to construct a recreation of Demon Drop, the first generation Intamin freefall ride which used to reside at the front of the park and has since been relocated to Dorney Park using the original K'nex roller coaster set. The ride is fully functional and contains numerous details such as the turnstiles for the queue. Here's the video link.

Let me know what you think!

^Agree!

It's really good for a recreation, and I think it's a first for DD. Since I've riden it about 3 times, from what I've seen of it while having fun free-falling it seems to be pretty accurate. Good job!

^You stole my words right out of my mouth! :D

The only thing I don't like is how the supports look weak. Try tubes, or really thin boxes, like on Flashback. I think it would look much better if you did.

Funny thing; I was thinking about something very similar to this once. I was planning on recreating it, too, but I never did.

EDIT: I didn't realize how to it was until I watched the video! You guys deserve an inventors tag!

I am amazed! How did you come up with that?! And it works flawlessly too. The only thing that could make it better would be adding more cars.

You can definitely say that! The only thing is that it's not listed as a rollercoaster :(

The supports are fine. We aren't dealing with a 5 weighted car train here.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback. I actually attempted to create this ride a number of years ago. I got the elevator lift figured out but the rest of didn't work. When the Cedar Point competition was announced I decided to try and build a new, fully functional Demon Drop using what I had learned from the earlier attempt. Attached are two pictures of that initial model.

The structure is a little bit weak under the radius of the drop but I was beginning to run out of pieces!

My model was selected as one of the three finalists in Cedar Point’s K’nex Great Thrill Ride Build-Off. You can vote for your favorite creation by liking your favorite ride's photo on Cedar Point's Facebook page. Voting ends at 3:00:00 PM ET on April 12, 2011. The finalist whose photo receives the most “likes” will be the winner!

That's weird Facebook won't let me "Like" any of the photos.

edit:

FYI, in case anyone else is as clueless as I was. You have to first like Cedar Point before you can like or comment on any of the photos.

Comet Recreation still underway.
