The Scorpion and the Dragon along with all the expansion kits are 100% customizable and flexible. I recommend that you get a scorpion to start. The new Phoenix has some flexible parts and some not. (Not the best starter kit.) The Comet is completely ridged, and can not be customized.

The Phoenix is a good starter kit, just not highly customizable.

So I suggest to get a Scorpion if you are aiming to build an entirely custom coaster.

The Phoenix is more of a expansion kit if you want to build Custom's. The Scorpion is the best starter kit. If you have the money you could get a dragon, but I would rather get 2 scorpions. But if you just want to build the model, then a Phoenix is great. Comet's are good too but you can't customize them other theme.

I'm actually looking at getting a Comet to have as a cool stationary model, and theming it.

Phoenix is the best kit to start with. Expansion packs will be available soon for it so it will be just as versatile as the other kits.
