Hey guys, I've been working on this brakes, and I'm happy to present you my side-friction brakes.
The good think about them, is that they don't push the cars up, since that looks unrealistic.

How to make them

First, make 8 of these:

Then make 2 of these:

After that, build these:

Take the piece of track you want the brakes to be on and connect the parts from step 1 and 3 as shown:

Take the brake-rails and connect them as shown:

Now take 2 chain-links, and connect them between the 90* connectors as shown:

As you can see, the rails are bending out a little in the beginning.
This way it brakes smoothly.

As you can see here, under-wheels aren't pushed to the track.
This proves that it only brakes by friction from the side.

Tips and tricks

If you want to, you can also add some tape to the brake-rails:

Note: This is tested with a really heavy weighted car

Enjoy!

Damn these are nice.

I really like the idea of not pushing the cars up. There are so many cool ideas for brakes, makes me want to come up with yet-another-something-new in brakes !!

I didn't think the cars being pushed up was a big deal (let alone noticeable!). My only problem with these brakes is that they will slow the train a lot more quickly because there is more friction created. (This is only hypothetical; I haven't tested either brake type myself yet).

They slow the car down pretty fast, are these adjustable? And the cars being raised isn't a big deal imho. It's barelly noticeable. I still prefer brakes with tubing as they are smooth and very controlable. Plus they don't really damage anything as they are still flexible. But the tape should take care of that happening.

I think this would be more usefull on tube coasters.

While I like Max's brakes better due to their adjustability, I do like new innovations for SSC.

Well, I needed harsh brakes for my station, so I can automate it right, Yours worked alright but took alot of space to bring them to a stop, And when there on there max setting... they are pushed up so much the chain dog dosen't work anymore. Suck's on the other hand were GREAT for what I need, They dont make it go upwards to make the chain dog not work and they stop the car like I wanted.

Oh, yeah that can happen, you can also choose to not press the middle tubing down entirely, the chain will be higher. Or you can use a secondary chaindog.

^ Depends on what you need really. They both have good and bad things.

Where yours are good for fast stops and only use regular pieces (thus being more piece consuming) + are mountable on almost every straight section of track. My design tends to slow them down more gradually allowing for precision braking, you do have to use tubing and need the orange connectors or the orange clips which only come with a few sets, the real down side on my design is that you need a base for it, or something similar.

One question, have you ran a chain on this? It seems the braking force is so powerful a chain would struggle with it?

Ps. I added this design to the tutorial compilation thread.

These are really good! I like how they work!
Only thing is that they're not adjustable. Pretty clever, though.

They are great breaks for a hydraulic launch coaster but they make nasty marks on the sides of the trains.
good idea.
